Tell me what you think! This is the beginning of the "Why it matters" section:
Writers, producers, and directors use fiction to apply real themes to imaginary situations. In order to make compelling television shows, the show has to be relevant to the present. When there are strong ties to the present, the show becomes something that is compelling to watch and will bring in good ratings for the show. The Cloud Minders was released in 1969. In 1969, President Lyndon B. Johnson has already signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, but there was still a lot of discrimination, and the topic of equal rights was fresh in most people’s minds. This fact legitimizes The Cloud Minders as an accurate portrayal of the kind of discrimination that was going on in the world. The producers of Star Trek wanted to make something that was timely and that’s themes would be applicable to the world that people were living in. The parallels between The Cloud Minders and the Caste System in India are no coincidence; The Cloud Minders was made to reflect real discrimination that was going on in America, and the proper way to approach it.
Being able to watch this episode and comprehend the themes objectively better equips us to understand our own world objectively. When we see both sides of the discrimination on Ardana without any bias, we can easily recognize that there is a huge social injustice being done to the Troglytes.
